Tips for a Divine Diwali Tablescape

How could you bring to life your own interpretation of a Diwali table tablescape? Here are a few ideas that you could consider.

Diwali Tabletop Arrangement

Before styling the complete Diwali tabletop arrangement, first, you need to think about the individual pieces that will all come together to form a complete look. Each detail from tablecloths and overlays to napkins and charger plates makes a big difference in the overall finished look. Therefore, a bold approach to trying new things is the key to achieving an impressive tablescape design.

Table Covers and Overlays

These form the very base of your overall Diwali tablescape design. While it may seem that a tablecloth is one of the least important features in table design, it is, in fact, the opposite. Think about it the same way as choosing a canvas for painting - it will affect how the finished result looks, will add texture, and create a pattern. By mixing different fabrics and colours, you immediately add richness and depth. For example, using a sari as a table cover or an overlay brings a multitude of character that you can then build further with table accessories. Trying out different textures with a pattern or intricate details and light-reflecting threads are an excellent choice.

Candles

Without a doubt, candles are the most important part of Diwali. The naturally warm light emitted from candles brings cosiness and comfort. Candles are also one of the most fun decorative element to play with since there are endless options for sizes, shapes, colours, and scents. Not only are they great as standalone pieces, but also they work fantastically incorporated in other elements and tabletop accessories. Smaller candles can be beautifully arranged into small clusters, while bigger ones work well on their own. A large scented candle with several wicks makes a beautiful centrepiece since these candles tend to come in beautiful glass holders which can be decorated even further by using textured candle sleeves. Tealights can be added to a shallow bowl of water together with some flowerheads.

Flowers

It wouldn't be Diwali without flowers. Rich, warm tones, soft textures, layers, and beautiful arrangements are at the very essence of this festival. Rows and rows of velvety, sunset-coloured marigolds, daisies, carnations, and roses - not only do they add texture and colours, but also soften the whole look. We suggest experimenting with unconventional flowers to add a modern touch - instead of marigolds, opt for orange tulips, and white lilies will look beautiful if you use them instead of jasmine.

Keep these tips in mind while putting together a Diwali Tablescape

• Play around with adding dried fruit, sweets, or even spices to your tabletop design to complement the flowers. Dried apricots, dates, mango, and raisins will beautifully contribute to the overall colour scheme. Put these in small brass or engraved bowls or scatter on charger plates.

• Adding objects of different height and texture immediately create interest. Different size candles, centerpieces, and even vases enliven the tablescape. Layer plates in different colours and patterns - plain and ornamental, brass charger plates with burgundy-coloured ones etc.

• Candles are everything so don't be afraid to experiment with different ways to display them. Combine stand-alone pieces with candles in lanterns, tea candles floating in a bowl of water, put some in candleholders.

• Diwali is the perfect opportunity to display collectables. You have some mismatched dinnerware collecting dust? Incorporate them in your tabletop design.

• Be bold! Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors, textures or materials to give your tablescape its own character.
